The Order of Christian Initiation is based on the principle that the process of conversion proceeds gradually through stages. Progress from one stage to the next is marked by a liturgical celebration in the midst of the parish community.

IMPORTANT DATES
for Rite of Election 2027:
- October 2026 — Survey for date selection will be sent for parishes to choose preferred date.
- December 4, 2026— Survey for date selection will close. Date selection is due this date.
- December 21, 2026— Our office will send a memo confirming the dates for each parish’s Rite of Election to parish provided POCs.
- January 8, 2027— Form with list of names is due. Please email forms to Aaron Arbizo or to the Office for Worship.
- February 2, 2027, 7:00 PM— Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion rehearsal (invitation is forthcoming). We will notify everyone in advance if the date/time changes.
- Intended for OCIA Coordinators, Book Carriers, Clergy Calling Names, and other relevant parish leadership
- Not Intended for catechumens or candidates preparing for their sacraments.
- February 12-16, 2027— Rite(s) of Election
- February 28, 2027— Deadline to send a letter to the bishop requesting faculties to confirm a baptized Catholic who has been part of OCIA/RICA. Please send letters to Santiago Avila, [email protected]
The Rite of Election is required for the liceity of the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation.
A Catechumen must transition to becoming an Elect prior to the Easter Vigil and reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist by participating in the Rite of Election.
The proper minister for the Rite of Election is a Bishop, presbyters require delegation to celebrate a Rite of Election at their parishes.
