Marriage Preparation

Marriage Preparation during COVID-19 “Stay at Home” Order

Although marriage formation is best done live and in person, given the circumstances, several online options during this time are available:

More online options are being developed by our local teams. Please check back on this webpage for updated information. As the COVID-19 situation unfolds, any changes and additional online offerings will be provided here.

Our regularly scheduled programs in July and thereafter are still being offered as planned. If any changes are made as the situation develops, information will be posted here.

Most pre-marital inventories, including our diocesan recommended FOCCUS inventory, can be completed online and then facilitated by clergy or mentor couples in online video meetings via Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, GoToMeeting, etc. For assistance with setting up online meetings, please contact Linda Ji, Director of Pastoral Care for Families in All Stages, at

To begin the process of preparation for Sacrament of Marriage in the Catholic Church, please contact your local parish six months to one year prior to your planned date. Part of your preparation will be to meet with your parish priest and attend one of the several options for Marriage Preparation programs offered throughout the Diocese.

All programs focus on issues pertinent to a couple preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. They emphasize self-awareness as well as techniques to improve communication. Natural Family planning is strongly recommended as part of a good Marriage Preparation.

Engaged couples may select any of the programs listed in the link below based on the preference of content, location, cost or schedule. Prior approval of the priest of deacon responsible for their marriage is required. Programs by deanery location are listed here.

Couples seeking to have their marriages validated by the Church can obtain information by calling their local parish.

Mission:  To provide local churches with the tools to transform existing programs of marriage preparation into wellsprings of dynamic marriage discipleship that foster both parish connection and nurture authentic accompaniment before and after the wedding day.

The Diocese of Orange highly recommends the use of the program: Witness to Love.  Witness to Love is a virtues-based, Catechumenate model of marriage renewal and preparation that integrates modern principles of psychology and the virtues to help couples facilitate an authentic dialogue about their relationship.

Witness to Love is currently at San Antonio de Padua Church (714) 974-1416

For more information on how to bring Witness to Love to your parish, click here.
