Immigration – Know Your Rights
You have rights regardless of your immigration status. You might be at risk of being deported if you are undocumented, a non-citizen with a criminal history, on parole, or have a prior deportation order. To protect yourself, your family, and your community, you must know your rights.
You have constitutional rights:
- Do not open the door if an immigration agent is knocking on the door.
- Do not answer any questions from an agent if they try to talk to you. You have the right to remain silent.
- Do not sign anything without first speaking to a lawyer. You have the right to speak with a lawyer.
- If you are away from your home, ask the agent if you are free to leave. If they say yes, leave calmly.
- If you have a card that lists your Constitutional rights, give it to the agent. Show the card through the window or slide it under the door if you’re inside your home.
These are your rights, but you might still be detained.
Remember: Don’t run away, stay calm, be respectful, and don’t lie.
