Diocese of Orange 50th Anniversary Prayer

Loving Father, as we joyfully celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese of Orange, we give You thanks for every grace poured upon Your people. May this Jubilee year deepen our personal union with Your Son, Jesus Christ and transform us into tireless disciples who radiate Your mercy. Fill our communities with lively faith, daring hope and heroic charity and rekindle within us the fire of the Gospel as we faithfully carry out Your will for years to come.

Fifty years ago, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange was established by carving out a section of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and granting the people of Orange County their own church governance in which to spread the word of Christ. Set by the county’s existing geographic boundaries that stretch from south in San Clemente to north in La Habra, the Diocese of Orange was created by Vatican decree to become a new community of faith, one primed to cherish old traditions while heartily embracing the new.

In the decades since our beginning in 1976, our numbers have exponentially grown, transforming the Diocese of Orange into one of the most vibrant Catholic hubs in the United States.

Our Diocese in 1976

  • 43 parishes
  • 41 Catholic schools
  • Serving ~330,000 Catholic faithful

Our Diocese in 2026

  • 64 parishes and centers
  • 37 Catholic schools
  • Serving ~1.3 million Catholic faithful

“The very name, Orange, suggests a golden treasure, and the new diocese is all that in its physical characteristics, its people and its traditions. The area is small enough to be unified as a true community and large enough to encompass a substantial number of generous-hearted people. These, along with the dedicated priests and religious who serve them, are the richest endowment one could hope for.”

—Bishop William R. Johnson, 1976
First Bishop of Orange

This year, we invite all in our Diocese of Orange — one of America’s largest Catholic communities — to celebrate our past while forging ahead with renewed vigor and love for Christ.
