Encountering Christ in the Prophet Isaiah

January 24 @ 8:30 am 12:30 pm

Presented by Fr. Timothy Peters, Professor of Biblical Theology at Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA.

Examining the Book of Isaiah – Some Church Father’s reffered to the great Prophecy of Isaiah as the 5 Gospel because it so eloquently spoke of the future Christ. Thus, it’s no surprise that the Church continually reads from Isaiah throughout the Advent, Lent and the Liturgical Year.

Isaiah Part I ‒ The Promise of a Future Davidic King – This presentation will cover the first 12 chapters Isaiah’s Great Prophecy which focuses on the destruction of the Northern Kingdom known as Israel and the Promise of a future Davidic King who will bring restoration and salvation, fulfilling the great promise which the Lord made to David of an eternal throne (2 Sam 7). The Church places special emphasis on these chapters during Advent and Christmas. This presentation will help you understand how Isaiah’s prophecies help prepare for the coming of the Messiah/Christ.

Isaiah Part II ‒ The Servant of the Lord and the Promise of Complete Restoration ‒ Many Church Fathers referred to Isaiah as the ‘5th Gospel’ because it so eloquently underlined and expressed the great hope for Zion’s future renewal and restoration. The Gospels frequently make allusions to these chapters (Isa 40‒66), because they underline that Zion’s sins will be forgiven and that she will rejoice when her sins are forgiven and children are restored to her. Thus, Isaiah concludes with the climatic themes of the New Covenant (Isa 55), The Lord’s people will be a light to the nations (Isa 60), the coming of the anointed figure who brings restoration and freedom (Isa 61), the renewal of Zion’s marriage (Isa 62), and a new heavens and a new earth (isa 65). Hence, the prophet Isaiah is essential for those who wish to understand the theology of the New Testament and the coming of the Christ.
