Garden Grove, Calif. (Sept. 10, 2021) – The carillon bells of Christ Cathedral will toll on Saturday, Sept. 11, as the Diocese of Orange honors and remembers all who lost their lives or were injured in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Flight 93 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

The bells inside the cathedral’s Crean Tower will ring four times (in Pacific Standard Time, not East Coast time) to mark the events of that historic day: at 8:46 a.m. (World Trade Center North Tower), 9:30 a.m. (World Trade Center South Tower), 9:37 a.m. (Pentagon) and 10:03 a.m. (Somerset County).

A patriotic tribute will follow.

Fr. Christopher Smith, rector of Christ Cathedral, asks that all who hear the bells take a moment of silence and offer a prayer of remembrance.

About the Crean Tower:
The 236-foot stainless steel mirrored spire was designed by Philip Johnson and completed in 1990. It was named after John and Donna Crean whose contributions helped fund its construction. The carillon contains 52 bells ranging from six inches to nearly 6 feet, which were forged in the Netherlands. The bells may be played manually from a room high inside the tower or from the consoles on the great cathedral organ. The carillon is named after Arvella Schuller, wife of the Rev. Robert Schuller, founder of the Crystal Cathedral (which has since been renamed Christ Cathedral following the Diocese of Orange’s purchase of the property).
