The OLMC Monthly Speakers Series 2016 Presents “Amoris Laetitia”
November 10, 2016 @ 7:30 pm
On the 19th of March in 2016, Pope Francis issued what is known as an Apostolic Exhortation
entitled “AMORIS LATITIA” [The Joy of Love}. The document is the result of two worldwide synods
held in 2014 and 2015. Bishops from all over the world were gathered on these two occasions to discuss
one of the most important issues facing the modern Church: the status of Marriage and the Family.
What is contained in the Pope’s exhortation is the official teaching of the Church on the vocations of
Marriage and Family Life. Much of the official teachings of the church on marriage in recent centuries
has focused on the Laws of the Church. Canon Law defines who is free to marry, the nature of the
marriage vows, the permanence of marriage and many other issues pertaining tocontracting a
Sacramental Marriage. However, the living of that Sacramental Marriage in daily life and encountering
the challenges that blend two human lives on a daily basis to create a family have not been as well
explained. The vocation of Marriage is one that most Catholics embrace, yet so many must face its
challenges on their own. It was for this reason that the Holy Father consulted the whole Church around
the world to discern how the teachings of our Faith might be more effective in helping people
to live happy, productive and holy lives. The result of these deliberations are shared in this Apostolic
Exhortation prepared by Pope Francis. Amoris Latitia offers a beautiful guide for every married couple,
from the newly married to those enjoying grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dr. Phil Johnston will
provide an overview of the Apostolic Exhortation “Amoris Latitia”, outlining the teachings of our Faith
that help us live the Family vocation and address its challenges with hope and enthusiasm.
