On retreat we will learn from the Holy Family – Jesus, Mary and Joseph – how to pray. I like to go to Seven Lakes Drive on the border of New York and New Jersey to pray. It’s my favorite spot. At the beginning of this hike I always start at the same place and normally stay on the same trail, where I do a little bit of stretching after having walked for about 10 minutes. I went there just a few days ago and, to my surprise, there was a tent. I have never seen a tent on this trail, let alone on the very spot where I do my warm-up. As I got closer, I noticed a family – a wife, a husband, and a child. I kept my distance, but I could hear that they were essentially training their young child of about 7 or 8 years old how to survive in the wild. They were showing him different routines, what to prepare for, how to conquer different obstacles in the wilderness. I was thinking, wow, how appropriate, because I was going on that hike with the purpose in my heart to pray about what I would like to share with you in preparation for our summer retreat. Since the theme touches on how to imitate the Holy Family at prayer, the first thing we need to do is pray for the desire to get away, just as that beautiful family was able to do. We need to have a purpose and we need to pray purposefully, to want to go away on our trail, so to speak. We need to learn how to survive in the wild. Because living in this world is living in the wild…meaning that there are so many dangers, temptations, and traps out there that we have to be on the lookout for. Just as this family planned their trip, we need to plan accordingly as well. So pray that we summon up within us the desire to attend this retreat, to want to learn more about how the Holy Family approached their prayer life and how it influenced everything that they did in their relationships, in their being faithful to God, in carrying out the law of Moses and going beyond it, as Jesus pointed out to them – that He was the way to the Father.

We must pray. In preparation for the retreat, we know all too well that the enemy will try to prevent us from going. He will come up with different excuses why we should not go, stay back, take it easy and forget about this summer with God. So prayer helps us to call his bluff and eliminate those obstacles. We can disarm him and be more desirous to go on the summer retreat. Then plan for different possibilities. I encourage you to look over the list of retreats on this flyer. Have a plan. Planning is crucial because we show our good intention and we also see what needs to be done, to iron out the wrinkles, perhaps financially.
