49th Annual National Convocation of Priests
April 24, 2017 @ 8:00 am - April 27, 2017 @ 5:00 pm
The National Federation of Priests’ Councils (NFPC) will hold its 49th Annual Convocation of Priests, April 24-27th, 2017 at the Majestic Garden hotel in Anaheim, California.
The NFPC Convocation, formerly for Priest Council members, is now open to all Catholic priests. It is designed as a time for prayer, presentations, discussion, fellowship, relaxation, sightseeing, and rejuvenation. Last year’s gathering, held in Indianapolis, was attended by priests from over 40 U.S. dioceses.
“Our goal is to nourish body, mind and soul,” said Fr. Tony Cutcher, priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and NFPC President since 2012. “We want to return priests to their ministries rejuvenated and encouraged, with a network of contacts to keep them connected and supported.”
He continued, “As a pastor of four parishes in the Dayton area, I know how hard it is to get away, but it’s vital for priests to connect and relax in the company of brother priests. Our parish staffs can handle us being away for a couple of days, and our health and ministry to the parish will be better for it.”
The theme for the 2017 Convocation is ‘Forging a Future with Pope Francis.’ Speakers will present information in light of Pope Francis’ leadership with practical and concrete applications for priestly life. This year’s speakers include Fr. Ralph O’Donnell reporting on the USCCB’s Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations Committee, Fr. Ken Simpson of the Archdiocese of Chicago speaking on reaching Millennials, Kevin Appleby who leads the International Migration Policy at the Center for Migration Studies speaking about Immigration, and Bishop Robert McElroy, Diocese of San Diego, speaking about Priestly Ministry.
Bishop Arturo Cepeda, Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit and Episcopal Liaison to NFPC, will be the main celebrant and homilist for the Tuesday Convocation Liturgy to be held at the Christ Cathedral complex. Following the Eucharist, an awards banquet will honor recipients of NFPC’s Mandatum Award (individual or organization whose ministry exemplifies the purpose and goals of NFPC) and Touchstone Award (a priest whose work supports the life and ministry of priests).
“The Convocation is designed to include great presentations on topics of practical assistance to priests, plus time to discuss the issues facing the U.S. presbyterate. There will also be time to relax with brother priests and even do some sightseeing,” said Alan Szafraniec, Managing Director of NFPC. “Year after year I’ve seen the priests that attend the Convocation leave encouraged and refreshed, with practical information as well as friendships and connections made. It’s a great opportunity for all priests.”
Fr. Tony agrees, “This convocation is truly a time when, through the Holy Spirit, the ‘intimate sacramental brotherhood’ is strengthened.”
