New piece added to Sistine exhibit

Over 25,000 visitors have experienced Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition currently on display on Christ Cathedral campus in Garden Grove. Exhibition guests are able to view life-size reproductions of all 34 Sistine ceiling frescoes. For those planning to attend in the future, a new piece has been added to augment the collection, Michelangelo’s masterwork, The Last Judgment.

The Last Judgment, also a fresco, covers the entire altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The souls of humans rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints. Altogether there are over 300 figures, with nearly all the males and angels originally shown as nudes; many were later partly covered up by painted draperies, of which some remain after recent cleaning and restoration.

This masterwork rendering of The Last Judgment hung in the Cathedral Cultural Center on Christ Cathedral campus is life size, 40’ x 40.’
