Dignitaries including The Most Reverend Kevin W. Vann, recently installed Bishop of Orange, December 15th  dedicated the newly constructed Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Newport Beach.

The two-and-a-half-hour ceremony included several special rites such as sprinkling the church and assembly with holy water, anointing the altar and walls of the church, incensing the altar and church with copious amounts of smoke, and lighting of the church.

“We are overjoyed to have reached this day at long last,” said Father Kerry Beaulieu, pastor, Our Lady Queen of Angels Church. “Since the groundbreaking 18 months ago, the church’s construction has been very visible to the countless people, but, really, this effort began more than 20 years ago, when it became clear that our parish needed a new home and this parish set out to build it.”

Indeed, according to Beaulieu, that part of the effort – including navigating land issues; working with the city, designers, and the diocese; and collaborating with St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, whose sale of the property to OLQA made the new structure possible – was less visible to the general public but necessary to reach this day.

“If ever there were an example of teamwork to accomplish a large goal, this is it,” said Beaulieu. “We’re especially honored to have Bishop Vann join us in one of his first official duties, and, as a new arrival to Orange County, witness the fruits of the labor of so many people.”

With seating for 1,200, the new church now is ready to welcome thousands of area Catholics, including those who identify themselves as Catholic but, for whatever reason, have drifted away from the church. The new building features a classic design that embraces natural light and promotes serenity and reflection, enabling parishioners to participate in comforting, familiar rituals in a state-of-the-art facility.

Built adjacent to the original, fifty-one-year-old church, the new structure also is earthquake resistant and provides much-needed additional parking for churchgoers. The new church is one part of a broader improvement program that also has led to ten new classrooms and renovations to existing facilities at the on-site Our Lady Queen of Angels School. A new gym is planned as the next improvement following the church’s completion.

Today’s dedication marked the culmination of a 20-plus-year process of collaboration among various entities, including city government, property owners, churches and design firms.

“Today we offer our deep thanks to all those people who have contributed to the creation of the new Our Lady Queen of Angels Church,” said Beaulieu. “Their legacy is part of this beautiful building.”
