Volunteering with the Detention Ministry

A Volunteer's Job Description:

 

Rationale:

To provide a witness of God’s unconditional love through the Catholic Faith Community.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Is accountable to the Diocesan Director of Catholic Detention Ministry and the Facility Coordinator
  • Is accountable to the City, State or County department that staffs the facility
  • Provides the particular ministry to the incarcerated for which they have been trained
  • Is to attend the required training sessions and gatherings
  • Should provide a twelve (12) month commitment to this ministry
  • Should be able to provide at least two to four (2 – 4) hours per month as scheduled
  • Must complete statistical forms for both CDM and the county promptly
  • Must keep up with changes posted on CDM web site

Qualifications:

  • Must be a praticing Catholic
  • Must exhibit an ability to see the presence of God in the incarcerated
  • Must be willing to accept and obey the rules of each facility
  • Must exhibit an awareness of one’s own gifts and limitations and be comfortable with them
  • Must strive to be open, flexible, and non-judgmental
  • Must be able to commit to a consistent presence
