INMATE GRIEVANCE Volunteers can inform inmates about filing an official grievance in cases where they feel their rights are being violated. Following are details about filing a Grievance: 1600.5.3 - Initiating a Grievance 6. All properly completed grievance forms shall be submitted within 14 calendar days of the alleged incident. Any grievance form submitted after 14 days will be considered invalid. The inability to obtain assistance is not a valid reason for exceeding the time limit for submissions. 1. The inmate/detainee may drop the completed grievance form in any grievance drop box. These boxes are located throughout the facility and accessible to all inmates/detainees. The grievances will be retrieved by the sergeant responsible for the area where the box is located. 2. The inmate/detainee may submit the grievance form directly to sworn staff. 1600.5.9 - Protection from Retaliation 1. Staff shall not harass, discipline, punish, or otherwise retaliate against an inmate/detainee who uses or participates in the grievance process. 2. The inmate/detainee may pursue any alleged or threatened retaliation through the grievance procedure.
PROBLEMS SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT FOR I.D. BADGE? We are receiving numerous complaints from volunteers having a difficult time scheduling an appointment for receiving an I.D. badge. We are working closely with Programs in hopes to resolve this issue. Please report to our office promptly when a problem occurs.
NEWS FROM PROGRAMS MAJOR INMATE MOVEMENT TAKING PLACE Programs reports there will be major inmate movement happening sometime next month. IRC will no longer be considered an Intake and Release Center and the Women's Central Jail that closed down a couple of years ago is scheduled to reopen sometime in April. Stay tuned! PROGRAMS PARTICIPATION SHEET 1. Correctional Programs reports they are still receiving the Sheriff's Dept. Participation Sheets filled out incomplete. This is the eight and a half by eleven white sheet that inmates sign in on the back and volunteers fill out the front. Often times the sheet is filled out but the volunteers name is missing, or the date and location of the service is missing. Volunteers will not receive time credit from incomplete sheets and therefore will not be able to renew their I.D. badge. 2. Be sure to PRINT CLEARLY you first and last name on the appropriate line. 3. Remember if you are doing two back to back services/Bible studies, you must turn in two Participation Sheets; one for each service. 4. Participation sheets must be handed to a Deputy or placed in the appropriate Programs box before leaving the facility. PARKING VALIDATIONS AT THEO LACY & DOWNTOWN CENTRAL JAILS Programs announced that they are only going to pay a maximum 4 hours parking per each entry into the jails. This should not be a problem since our scheduled services do not exceed more than two hours. GRAFFITI FOUND ON JAIL PROPERTY Programs repots graffiti was fond scratched into a table after a religious service. They ask that volunteers be vigilant and report incidences involving an inmate vandalizing jail property.

The California Catholic Conference is the watch-dog organization in Sacramento that tracks public policy issues in the State legislature as they relate to the Catholic Church. If you are interested in receiving their weekly email newsletter please go to www.cacatholic.org and click the Catholic Legislative Network button on the right. This is a great way to see what legislation is being proposed and how it affects our Catholic beliefs. LIGHTS ON Our collaborative partner St. Vincent de Paul provides the Lights On ministry that assists inmates being released onto the streets in the middle of the night.
